I think and upstander is someone who does something that impacts the community in a good way and helps benefit people or things who weren't being benefited before. Upstanders help the minority and are nice to people who deserve it. Upstanders to me make a difference not just to make money, but to help the people who really need it. A good example of this is Jeff Brown. Jeff Brown is the founder and creator of Pasadena YES. Pasadena YES stands for Youth Education and Sports. His mission is to bring kids from different backgrounds together through sports. Pasadena YES is a way t o learn sportsmanship and life skills. Jeff was even pronounced coach of the year in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2016, and 2017. In Jeff’s opinion, sports is the best way for a kid because they can have fun, get exercise, and make new friends. Pasadena YES doesn’t focus on winning, they focus on teamwork and fun. They structure teams to be fair and not based on skill. Win or lose, everybody has fun. Pasadena YES’s motto is “Who won, we all won!” I think Jeff is an upstander because he is doing something not a lot of people will do. He is helping kids from different backgrounds learn sports and make friends. He teaches them life lessons and makes them successful. He cares for every kid who attends Pasadena YES . With personal experience I can confirm that he does a n unsurpassed job of being a coach. He is thoughtful and fair. He is not like other sports teams where they base teams off of skill which can make people think they aren't good at the sport. Jeff isn't like that, he wants everyone to feel counted and makes teams fair. He doesn't encourage winning, he just wants kids to have fun. Even if the kids do win, he teaches them sportsmanship so they don't make fun of the losing team. Jeff was even included in the Power of One book by Truade Gomez. Pasadena YES is a great organization filled with great people who can teach you great life lessons.
This is Jeff Brown, another coach, my brother, and me. In 2013, I joined Pasadena YES's basketball camp. That is how I started playing basketball. This is in 2013 after my basketball season. This is also how I met Jeff Brown.
This is Coach Jeff winning coach of the year in 2009. He was presented the award by LeBron James. Coach Jeff is the guy 2nd from the left.
